Staged Reading of "The Waste Land"

21.03.2022 - Staged reading of T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land

University of Fribourg, English Department

Organizers: Prof. Thomas Austenfeld and Prof. Julia Straub

Time: Monday, 21 March 2022, 17:15 – 20:00

Location: Aula of the University of Fribourg, Miséricorde building, Avenue de l’Europe 20

This event will commemorate the modernist centenary of 1922 (an annus mirabilis, considering the publication of both T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land and James Joyce’s Ulysses among so many other things) while making visible the vibrant work of the SAUTE community to the wider public.

Embedded in a co-taught MA seminar on transatlantic modernist poetry, this staged reading involves MA-level students from the University of Fribourg who, together with the organizers, will revisit central themes and scenes from T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land – one of the landmarks of literary modernism.

The performance of mini-scenes will be followed by discussion.

This event is open to the public, but registration is mandatory for participants that are not members of SAUTE or the University of Fribourg. They should send an e-mail to Prof. Julia Straub, julia.straub@unifr.ch, to register.

Possible restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic may apply.
