75-year anniversary event of the “Swiss Association of University Teachers of English “SAUTE”, organized by Dr Annina Seiler and Dr Nicole Studer-Joho and Master students of the English Department of the University of Zurich.

Switzerland counts among the small but exciting places for the transmission of Old English. Old English is the ancestor language of present-day English, which was spoken from about AD 500 to 1100. Swiss libraries preserve some of the earliest Old English written sources including Old English bird names, names of the months, Anglo-Saxon runes, as well as the oldest version of Bede’s Death Song. During the SAUTE anniversary year, a group of students and lecturers from the University of Zurich have been studying these texts. At the event in St Gallen, they will present them in their linguistic and cultural context, approaching them from a scholarly as well as an imaginative and theatrical perspective.

13.05.2022 - SAUTE jubilee event at Basel University's English Department

On the 13th May 2022, we celebrated British and Irish culture in Basel to honour SAUTE’s 75th anniversary. Prof. Dr. Michelle Witen gave an illuminating talk on James Joyce’s Ulysses to mark the centenary of its publication. This was followed by short presentations on the illustrious guests of renowned hotel Les Trois Rois, British and Irish life in Basel (past and present), and English as a lingua franca.

The event was blessed with nice weather and so we spent the rest of the evening under the lime tree in our beautiful courtyard, ceilidh dancing and enjoying the sounds of pipes, Bluejay’s celtic folk-pop, and Andrew Shields’ band “The Literati”.

21.03.2022 - Staged Reading of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land

This event will commemorate the modernist centenary of 1922 (an annus mirabilis, considering the publication of both T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land and James Joyce’s Ulysses among so many other things) while making visible the vibrant work of the SAUTE community to the wider public. It will take place on Monday, 21 March at the Aula of the University of Fribourg in the Miséricorde building (Avenue de l'Europe 20) from 17:15 to 20:00.

25.02.2022 - Ulysses at 100: Event at the University of Lausanne

Joyce’s novel was published on his 40th birthday, February 2 1922; we will celebrate the centenary on February 25 2022, at the University of Lausanne's Vortex from 6pm to 10pm.
