SUMMARY:Virtual Guest Lecture "Seriality and Digital Cultures"
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Shane Denson (Stanford University)\n\n\n\nAcross literatu
re, film, radio, television, and computational media, seriality and seriali
zation have been important formal and narrative strategies for popular medi
a cultures from the nineteenth century onward.\n\nSeries mark out temporal
trajectories that invite long-term integration into our lives, providing op
portunities for ongoing identification/disidentification and accompanying o
ur own biographical development over time. However, the temporal dimension
shifts radically when we move from a cinematic media regime, based in the r
ecording of past events, to a digital or post-cinematic one, where predicti
ve algorithms and related computational processes actively anticipate futur
e developments, including our own desires and identifications. In such a me
dia environment, individual and collective identities and differences (incl
uding those of gender and race, among others) are much more actively and mi
nutely at stake. This presentation looks at several relevant examples and d
evelops a theory of seriality for the post-cinematic age.\n\nCo-organized b
y Hannah Schoch, Mansi Tiwari, and Morgane Ghilardi. Hosted by the Universi
ty of Zurich’s English Department. Please register using the QR code or by
