SUMMARY:Not Native American Art? Forgeries, Copies, Replicas and Other Vexed Identities
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture\n\nProf. Dr. Janet Catherine Berlo, University of
Rochester\n\nIn the twenty-first century, scholars, collectors, and artist
s all must grapple with ethical issues concerning who has the right to make
and/or represent Aboriginal North American art. Yet the history of the mak
ing of this art is riddled with misrepresentations and even forgeries, many
of which have not been fully explored nor unmasked in the literature on th
ese topics. This lecture, derived from a book-in-progress (the first on thi
s topic), considers replicas, copies, forgeries, homages, and even digital
“surrogates” as they apply to archaeological, historical and contemporary a
rts of Indigenous North America.\n\nPart of the Lecture Course "Kostbarkeit
en aus der Ferne: Alteritäts- und Luxuskonzepte in Mittelalter und Früher
 Neuzeit"\n\nInstitut für Kunstgeschichte\n\nUniversität Bern\n\nHauptgebäu
